Okay, So Why Should I Read The Bible?

WHY SHOULD I READ MY BIBLE?

bible-notebookThe Bible is our manual for maximizing our lives here on earth. When you buy a new mobile phone, it comes with a manual or instructions on how to use the phone to its full capacity. However, many of us do not bother reading the manual and so although your phone can do amazing things, we only know how to use a few of the functions such as surfing the Internet, making phone calls, texting and whatsapping people and stalking others on Instagram. We are unable to use the phone to its full potential.

Equally, a Christian who does not regularly study God’s manual for life is unlikely to fulfill his/her potential on earth. Life becomes a struggle rather than a success. The secrets to accessing all things that we need to live a prosperous and godly lives are all in the word of God and studying the Bible reveals our great inheritance and riches in Jesus Christ (Psalm 37:29; Romans 8:17; Ephesians 1:18).

The Bible is key for the believer’s growth in Christ in the same vein milk is essential for a baby or how food is salient to an adult’s growth.   The study of God’s word, therefore, is vital to the believer’s growth, success and increasing faith in God. Jesus Christ was God’s word revealed in the flesh (John 1:14). He defeated the devil with His superior knowledge and understanding of the word of God (Matthew 4:1-11).

2nd Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is given by God. And all Scripture is useful for teaching and for showing people what is wrong in their lives. It is useful for correcting faults and teaching the right way to live. Using the Scriptures, those who serve God will be prepared and will have everything they need to do every good work.”

WHAT BENEFITS DO I GET FROM READING MY BIBLE?

Understanding the benefits of an activity helps us to remain committed to it; for example, many young men exercise in the gym because they know that the training will help them to grow their muscles. Below are at least 5 benefits you gain from studying your Bible.

1)Faith-Studying the word of God increases our faith (Romans 10:17). Faith is the medium by which we can take dominion of our world because it makes all things possible for the believer (Mark 9:23). The author of Hebrews stated that if you do not receive the word of God with faith, it would not profit the receiver (Hebrews 4:2). This is because without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). So a diligent study of God’s word allows us to have faith, which is a force required to live a life of infinite possibilities. Every situation can be changed through Faith!

2)Understanding the mind of God- God’s word helps us to understand the mind of God. This is important because for any relationship to be successful, the parties involved ought to understand one another’s character.  This understanding facilitates a successful and intimate relationship.

3)Inheritance- God’s word also helps us to understand our new status and inheritance in Christ Jesus. This inheritance includes spiritual blessings, eternal life and a new spiritual position with Christ in the heavenly places (Romans 8:17; Ephesians 2:6; 1Peter 1; Acts 20:32; John 3:16).  We are seated with Jesus at the right side of God (Mark 16:19; Ephesians 2:6). The right side of God is a place of power and authority.

power34)Manifestation of God’s power- It is vital for you to know that the extent of the power of God you’ll experience in your life is based on the measure of His word in you. The more of God’s word in you, the greater His manifestation of Himself in our lives. This is because God watches over His word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12). So if you want God to perform great things in your life, then have a great measure of His word in you.

5) Love- Love is the greatest commandment for every person on earth but it is also possibly the most overused and abused word in this current generation. For many people, what they call love is lust. True love comes from God. This love is unconditional. This unconditional love is called Agape love. God loves us because He wants to and not because of anything we have done to deserve it.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

We can only truly love other people unconditionally only after we have accepted God’s love through faith in Jesus. Jesus puts God’s love into our hearts so that we now have a supernatural ability to love our friends and family and everyone else in our lives with agape love or unconditional love.

So love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’  The second most important commandment is this: ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31).

As we study God’s word, His word enters into our hearts so that we begin to think and act like Jesus. In that sense we begin to love like Jesus.

The benefits of God’s word for the believer is not limited to those outlined above. There are many more that you can probably think of that have not been mentioned.

Are there any other benefits of God’s word that have not been listed here? Please feel free to comment below.
